The excitement surrounding the 30th Anniversary celebration
of The Playboy Jazz Festival continues to mount with the announcement
that trumpeter *Terence Blanchard* and renowned bassist *Marcus Miller*,
both Grammy winning artists, have been added as special guests to the
Festival lineup. Additionally, Playboy is pleased to welcome vocalist
*Amy Keys*, popular artist/producer *DJ C-Minus* and 41 student dancers
from the *Debbie** **Allen** **Dance** **Academy*. The festival takes
place Saturday and Sunday, June 14th and 15th at the Hollywood Bowl.
Blanchard, who will perform on Saturday with The James Moody
Quartet, is an internationally renowned jazz trumpeter, bandleader,
composer and arranger. He composed the score for the four hour Hurricane
Katrina documentary for HBO entitled /_When the Levees Broke: A Requiem
in Four Acts_/, which formed the basis of his 2007 recording /_A Tale of
God’s Will (A Requiem for Katrina)_/, which won the Grammy for Best
Large Jazz Ensemble Album.
Added exclusively for the Playboy Jazz Festival, bassist
Marcus Miller, D.J. C-Minus and dancers from the noted Debbie Allen
Academy (The Academy’s dancers received a two minute standing ovation at
the Herbie Hancock tribute last October at the Kodak Theater) will join
2008 Grammy winner Herbie Hancock for a special performance of the
pianist’s 1983 hit “Rockit.”
A versatile composer, producer and multi instrumentalist for
the past three decades, Miller is best known for his long term
associations with Miles Davis, Luther Vandross and David Sanborn. His
critically acclaimed latest CD /_Marcus_/ (2008) features guest
appearances by Corinne Bailey Rae and Keb’ Mo’, who is also appearing on
this year’s show. Miller will also host the first ever Playboy Jazz
Cruise (featuring Herbie Hancock as special guest), scheduled to set
sail January 25th to February 1st, 2009 as the finale to the Festival’s
30th Anniversary.
An artist, producer, and touring DJ, C-Minus has worked with and/or
opened for everyone from Wu-Tang Clan, the Foo Fighters, and Moby to
Korn, Johnny Cash, Blink 182, Metallica, Green Day, Kid Rock and Kanye West.
Vocalist Amy Keys, who has been added to the Herbie Hancock
and the River of Possibilities tour, will perform with the keyboard
legend on Sunday. Her extensive touring credits include k.d. lang, Joe
Cocker, Tears For Fears, Kevin Spacey (“Beyond the Sea” tour), Michael
Bolton and Philip Bailey.
As part of this year’s 30th anniversary celebration, the
Playboy Jazz Festival will also showcase rare photos from the Playboy
Archives featuring legendary performers from the past 29 years. The
photo montage will be shown on the Festival’s big screens before and
after each day’s lineup. Approximate times are 2:10 p.m. and 10:45 p.m.
on Saturday, June 14th and 1:40 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. on Sunday, June 15th.
