Charlotte, NC, February 05, 2012 --(PR.com)--
Grammy Award-Winning composer and R&B Singer Gordon Chambers will
be in concert at The Sunset Club in Charlotte on February 16th.
Presented by the Charlotte Division of Music Cares, proceeds from the
live music concert will go to benefit the non-profit Samaritan’s Feet.

The
accomplished artist has joined forces with the Barefoot Entertainment
division of Samaritan’s Feet in order to provide new shoes and hope for
children in need around the world. After receiving esteemed awards for
penning hit songs for iconic R&B legends such as Anita Baker,
Beyonce, Usher, Whitney Houston, Yolanda Adams and the legendary Patti
Labelle, he has released his third solo album, Sincere, and will be in
Charlotte as a part of his promotional tour “One Night Only, with Gordon
Chambers & Friends.”

Mr. Chambers will host the event
barefoot in order to raise awareness for the estimated 300 million
children who are without shoes in the world today.

“Many of these
children do not have access to proper foot care, and a simple pair of
shoes reduces their risk of infection, disease and amputation,” said
Peter Rieke, Director of Barefoot Entertainment. “Still others are
unable to attend school to receive an education because they simply lack
shoes – and we are grateful Gordon Chambers has signed on to become a
national and international Barefoot Entertainment Ambassador to help
provide children an on-going opportunity of hope.”

Samaritan’s Feet has a goal to provide 10 million pairs of shoes to children around the world in the next 10 years.

According
to Essence Magazine (of which Gordon is the former Entertainment
Editor), Gordon “effortlessly melds a pop/R&B sound with a classic
soul aesthetic that is certain to surprise and delight contemporary
R&B fans and soul enthusiasts alike.” (Castro, 2011) Newcomer Eliz
Camacho will be opening for Gordon.

The concert will be held
February 16th at 8PM at the Sunset Club located at 1820 South Blvd
Charlotte, NC 28203-4717. Admission is $15. For tickets contact

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

A
National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, 16-time Grammy winner,
prolific composer and undisputed keyboard virtuoso, CHICK COREA has
attained living legend status after four decades of unparalleled
creativity and artistic output. Corea is regarded as one of the most
prolific composers and recording artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
A masterful pianist who is one of the top stylists to emerge after Bill
Evans and McCoy Tyner, Corea is equally individual and recognizable on
synthesizer. His compositions include jazz standards such as "Spain, "
"La Fiesta" and "Windows."

Corea was born in 1941 and began
studying piano at the age of four. He made his recording debut as a
leader with 1966's Tones for Joan's Bones and his 1968 trio set Now He
Sings, Now He Sobs is considered a classic. In 1968, Corea joined Miles
Davis's band during an important transitional period. He started playing
electric piano and was on albums such as Filles de Kilimanjaro, In a
Silent Way, Bitches Brew and Miles Davis at the Fillmore. When he left
Davis, Corea played avant-garde acoustic jazz in Circle. Toward the end
of 1971, Chick formed his first edition of the groundbreaking Return to
Forever. Fans embraced the group and were able to enter the world of
jazz through such important albums as Where Have I Known You Before, No
Mystery and Romantic Warrior. Later recordings include The Leprechaun,
My Spanish Heart, Musicmagic and RTF Live. In 1985, Corea formed the
fusion group, the Elektric Band, balancing it out with his Akoustic
Trio.

Corea's impact on jazz continues, as evidenced by The
Enchantment (duets with banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck), The New Crystal
Silence (duets with longstanding collaborator Gary Burton), Returns
(documenting RTF's 2008 reunion tour) and Five Peace Band Live (with
John McLaughlin, Christian McBride, Kenny Garrett and Vinnie Colaiuta).

Now
He Sings, Now He Sobs was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
In 2010, Corea entered the DownBeat Magazine Hall of Fame and was named
Artist of the Year in the annual Readers' Poll.
Visiting Artist STEVE BAILEY, bass, a pioneer of the six-string
fretless bass, has toured and recorded with a wide range of artists,
including Dizzy Gillespie, Jethro Tull, Rippingtons, and Willie Nelson.
Bailey attended both the University of North Texas and the University of
Miami, where he graduated with a BM in Studio Music and Jazz. Twice
named Bass Player magazine's Bass Player of the Year runner-up, he has
been featured in many international music magazines and journals. Bailey
performs clinics and concerts worldwide and co-leads Bass Extremes with
Victor Wooten. Bailey's innovative techniques have often been copied,
but never duplicated.

UNCW's Thomas S. Kenan Distinguished
Professor of Jazz JOE CHAMBERS, drums, is an internationally known jazz
percussionist, composer and educator. He has worked with some of the
most influential figures on the jazz scene in the last several decades
and is also a recognized composer whose works have been performed at
Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. As a sideman and leader, Chambers has
recorded more than 500 albums and CDs. He has performed and recorded
with Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, McCoy
Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Andrew Hill and
many more. Chambers' credits include Chick Corea's Tones for Joan's
Bones, Hubbard's Breaking Point, Hutcherson's Components, Shorter's
Schizophrenia and Etcetera, Hill's Compulsion, and Tyner's Tender
Moments, as well as Archie Shepp's New Thing at Newport, Charles Mingus'
Like a Bird and many others. Chambers' compositions have been covered
by Hutcherson, Hubbard and M'Boom; he has also recorded on soundtracks
for several Spike Lee films, including Mo' Better Blues.
35th ANNUAL ATLANTA JAZZ FESTIVAL
Memorial Day Weekend | May 26 – 28 Piedmont Park | <a href="http://www.atlantafestivals.com
www.atlantafestivals.com<br />
OVERVIEW: The City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs celebrates the 35th Annual Atlanta Jazz Festival, Memorial Day weekend, May 26 – 28, 2012 in Historic Piedmont Park. The Festival weekend will feature music on three stages with performances by jazz legends and young guns and is FREE and open to the public. The Festival experience will also include a Jazz Eco Village, interactive kids play areas, jazz education workshops, and vendors displaying some of the city's finest arts & crafts, food & drinks, and merchandise. The Atlanta Jazz Festival is the perfect way to start your Memorial Day weekend!

The mission of the Atlanta Jazz Festival is to expose and entertain a diverse audience of Jazz aficionados, young Jazz enthusiasts and musical artists to the rich heritage and variety of Jazz as an authentic form of traditional American music. Regarded as one of the country’s largest free jazz festivals, we are proud to continue a tradition of presenting Jazz in its purest form as a cultural and educational event for millions of citizens and visitors. The Atlanta Jazz Festival provides the City with an opportunity to unify Atlanta’s diverse population, to celebrate Atlanta’s rich cultural heritage and to promote tourism.

In 1977 organizers of the first "Atlanta Free Jazz Festival" wanted to host a celebration where the music would be a liberated art form at no cost to the community. Only the best jazz would do. They pulled together the 29 act festival on a shoestring budget with sponsors such as Coca Cola and Peaches Record Store. By 1984 when 'Free' was dropped from the name the Atlanta Jazz Festival had major national sponsorship and a reputation for pulling in some of the top Jazz artists in the world but the commitment to keep the jazz free flowing and the festival FREE OF CHARGE remained. Over the years the Atlanta Jazz Festival has been backdrop to musical legends such as Miles Davis, Dizzie Gillespie, Sarah Vaughn, Herbie Hancock, The Heath Brothers, Nina Simone and others.

North Hollywood, CA - KPFK 90.7 announces its honorees for the 2nd Annual Hero Awards and Tribute. The Hero Awards is a benefit series for the Los Angeles-based Pacifica Radio station. The event honors icons of our time that have left an impact on music and community. This year’s honoree is Gil Scott-Heron (musician/political poet), with special awards to Charlie Haden (musician/activist), Fernando Pullum (musician/educator) and a Lifetime Achievement Award to Pete Seeger (musician/activist) for his contributions as an artist and activist in the U.S. The 2nd Annual KPFK Hero Awards and Tribute is set to take place on Sunday, May 6th, 2012 at the Ford Anson Theater, 2580 Cahuenga Blvd. East, Hollywood, CA 90028. The event starts with a VIP reception at 5 pm and the show starts at 7 pm.

The KPFK Hero Awards and Tribute launched in 2010 honoring Jazz legend Billy Higgins. The idea for the series was the result of a heartfelt on-air conversation between KPFK Music Director Maggie LePique and musician Charles Lloyd about Billy Higgins, during which LePique thought it would be relevant for KPFK 90.7 to mark the upcoming 10th anniversary of Higgins’ death by celebrating his life and body of work. She enlisted Kasey Lovelace, Music Consultant and friend of the Higgins family to develop the idea into a full-scale event. Catalina Popescu, owner of Catalina Bar and Grill, honored her long friendship with LePique and Higgins by donating her world-renowned venue for the tribute by Higgins’ esteemed contemporaries such as Stanley Clarke, Charles Lloyd, George Duke, Kenny Burrell among others who performed to a “standing room only” audience. The demand from both the music and public affairs community has prompted the station to continue as an annual award series.

KPFK 90.7 FM is a member station of the Pacifica Foundation, which consists of five radio stations, over 100 affiliate stations, and the Pacifica Radio Archives, responsible for preserving the voices of artists, activists and progressive journalists since 1949, when the foundation was established by peace activist Lew Hill. To further peace through broadcasting activities, Hill determined that radio sponsored by individual listeners would be the best way to ensure editorial freedom. The KPFK Hero Awards and Tribute is a means to both raise funds and advance the Pacifica Mission.

Jazz
enthusiasts no longer have to hold their breath with the final
announcement of artists for the 2012 Cape Town International Jazz
Festival announced today at Katzy’s in Rosebank, Johannesburg. This
year’s Cape Town International Jazz Festival will take on March 30 and
31. In its 13th year, the festival continues to titillate South African
audiences with the finest in local and international performers at the
Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). The headliners
reflect the festival's philosophy of broadening audience's perspectives
of what is understood as 'jazz'.

"If it's music, sweet music,
lets it play, " is the philosophy of Jamaican-hailing reggae band Third
World - one of the headliner acts aimed at bridging these divides.
Originally formed in 1973 in Kingston, Third World has over its
three-decade spanning career interwoven subtleties of funk, soul,
R&B and rock into reggae music, releasing 23 albums in total. They
are one of Jamaica's longest running acts which means that they easily
bumped heads with the likes of Bob Marley and the Wailers early in their
career. Third World will make their South African debut at this year’s
festival, firing up their message of peace, love and unity.
Brooklyn
based multi-instrumentalist and producer, Marcus Miller is another
major artist who headlines the festival. While Millers' main instrument
is bass, his prolific work started in the late 70s. He has worked as an
arranger, songwriter, film score composer, keyboardist, clarinetist and
saxophonist. A live set from Miller can include an odd mix of anything
from The Talking Heads to John Coltrane and The Stylistics. Miller was
born at a time when jazz was peaking in New York. He was part of a
musical family which made becoming a multi-instrumentalist in his
teenage years natural. Some of his best known work is with Miles Davis
during the early 80's, working on the albums Tutu and Music from Siesta.
He has an epic background of musical accolades and as a session
musician has worked with the likes of Michael Jackson, Wayne Shorter,
Chaka Khan and Aretha Franklin.
Harlem born songwriter and vocalist
Patti Austin and her trio will tour her Grammy award-winning jazz
program which includes hits ranging from Ella Fitzgerald to Avant
Gershwin. Austin has a legacy of 16 solo albums which cross musical
boundaries. Her road to success was paved early as she made her debut at
the Apollo Theatre in 1954 at the age of four and had a contract with
RCA Records when she was five. Keeping the musical fires burning, The
Patti Austin Trio's festival performance will form part of a massive
2012 European tour with new album Sound Advice.

Completing the
headliners of international performers is Kansas City-born vocalist
Kevin Mahogany. New Yorker Magazine has labeled him "The Standout jazz
vocalist of his generation". Starting off his career as an
instrumentalist, Mahogany has focused his career on being a jazz
vocalist in the style of Joe Williams. Currently he runs his own label
called Mahogany Jazz.

The legendary Quincy Jones is responsible
for discovering and introducing Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodriguez to the
festival organisers. The impromptu performance of Rodriguez in Jones’
lounge for organisers Rashid Lombard and Billy Domingo convinced the
pair that Rodriguez was a natural fit for the festival. Jones says "I'm
thrilled that Alfredo has been given a platform to perform at the Cape
Town International Jazz Festival. I think he will find surprising
musical similarities between his roots in Cuba and his South African
experience."
Other international performers at the festival include
Chinese minimalist solo pianist Xia Jia and French bossa nova meets
nu-wave act Nouvelle Vague. Joining them is Allen Stone, a storytelling
guitarist and singer from Washington who could be described as a funky
white boy with soul. Angolan afro-funk singer and composer Gabriel
Tchiema completes the line-up of international acts.

Audiences
will be thrilled to see legendary South African trumpeter and bandleader
Hugh Masekela return to the festival and present a special project for
the first time on local shores. Masekela will rally up an army of
musical giants for 'MAMA AFRICA' -a tribute to the great songbird Miriam
Makeba. Masekela as musical director joins forces with a powerhouse
trio of vocalists in the form of Vusi Mahlasela, Thandiswa Mazwai and
Zolani Mahola. The show made its debut at the Rio Loco Festival in
Toulouse, France in June 2010 and has since travelled to Barcelona,
London and Berlin.

Masekela won't be the only South African legend
on stage this year. Dorothy Masuka will also perform at the festival.
Masuka rose to fame in the 50's as a struggle artist as a singer
alongside the likes of Masekela and Makeba.
If the edgiest music
that is coming out of South Africa at the moment is hip-hop, then the
festival has been spot on with the talent this year. HHP aka Hip Hop
Pantsula and Cape Town's own swag-boasting Ill Skillz aka Ill Literate
Skill join the line-up. HHP is a multi-SAMA award-winning rapper and
alongside Ill Skillz represent fresh and youthful South African voices.

There
is a huge focus on African roots and rhythms on the festival line-up
this year. Pietermaritzburg born saxophonist Steve Dyer has been on the
South African music scene for some time but he has constantly evolved
musically. His latest project Ubuntu Music will be released as an album
this year and performed at the festival for the first time. His band
features pianist Bokani Dyer, bassist Shaun Johannes, trumpeter Lwanda
Gogwana and drummer Andre Swartz. In a similar vein, South
African
bassist Herbie Tsoaeli, who has performed with some of S.A's greatest
jazz musicians, will be presenting his long-awaited debut album African
Time. Harmonica player Adam Glasser has spent significant time between
South Africa and the United Kingdom, collaborating with major artists
from both countries such as Dudu Pukwana and Toots Thielemens. Glasser
will present his latest album Mzansi at the festival. Cape Town based
saxophonist Victor Kula grew up in Rylands and now resides in Gugulethu.
He has kept his musical associations proudly local and is greatly
influenced by the late Winston 'Mankunku' Ngozi. Hassan'adas led by
percussionist John Hassan experiments with Marrabenta and African jive
rhythms
Old school glitz and glamour diva Sophia Foster, one of S.A's
sisters of song also joins the line-up. Another kind of diva,
ex-fashion stylist Lindiwe Suttle initiated her career as a vocalist
with Rus Nerwich and The Collective Imagination in 2008. Now Suttle has
returned from Berlin with a more electronic focus on her debut album
Kamikaze Art courtesy of engineer Dave Kutch whose previous work
includes Al Green and Alicia Keys.

Zakes Bantwini has himself
confessed that his live performance launches a wilder alter-ego,
“Zakhele Madida (his real name) is actually a shy guy and a bit
reserved. When I 'm on stage I am in a trance and the Zakes Bantwini
character takes over. He just comes out.” Bantwini is one of the few
South African artists who has managed to cross the boundary of
afro-house and live jazz. Radio personality, Idols judge, singer and
songwriter Unathi will also perform at the festival. Fans can expect new
material from Unathi since she recently released her third album With
Love.

As previously announced, the rest of the line-up for 2012 is
completed by the following artists: James Ingram (USA), Dave Koz with
special guest Patti Austin (USA), Mike Stern with special guest Dave
Weckl (USA), Virtual Jazz Reality (SA), Brubecks play Brubeck (USA/SA),
Ron Carter, Donald Harrison and Lenny White (USA), Andre Petersen
Quintet (SA), Atmosphere (USA), Jean Grae (USA), Goodluck (SA), Zamajobe
(SA), Zahara (SA), The Jason Reolon Trio (SA), David Sanchez with
special guest Lionel Loueke (Puerto Rico/Benin), The Moreira Project
(Mozambique) and Alexander Sinton High School Jazz Band (SA).

A
massive affirmation regarding the artistic and cultural importance of
the jazz festival was President Jacob Zuma's mention of the festival in
his State of the Nation speech last year. Over 34 000 tourists are
attracted to the festival annually. Mr Paul Mashatile, Minister of Arts
and Culture comments on the relevance of the festival, “The Cape Town
International Jazz Festival does not only expose audiences to a wide
array of the best international and local music, the event also
contributes to providing a larger skills base in the creative sector
which helps in sustaining the creative industries in South Africa.”
Aside from contributing a significant amount to South Africa's economic
and tourism industries, young journalists are nurtured in the annual
Arts Journalism Program led by jazz critic Gwen Ansell.

Developmental
programs where students and professionals are paired is key to the
festivals outlook. Each year the festival provides a series of workshops
which run over eight days aimed at developing methods and transferring
skills in terms of music and business. Dr Ivan Meyer, Minister of
Cultural Affairs and Sport in the Western Cape comments, "Musical talent
is vital to the success of these kinds of events, and music development
programmes for the youth, such as those funded by the Western Cape
Government, are the perfect platform to grow and nurture talent.”

Celebrating
not only musical creativity, but visual creativity too, The Duotone
Photographic Exhibition is another annual fixture of the festival. Every
year it commemorates prolific jazz photography.

One of the most
exciting elements to the festival is the annual free Community Concert
which brings thousands together in the centre of Cape Town on Green
Market Square. This year the concert will take place on March 28th, the
Wednesday preceding the festival. The line-up is usually a teaser of
some of the local and international acts that will feature at the
festival.

The festival has over the years garnered huge
provincial support from the Western Cape. Minister Alan Winde, MEC for
Finance, Economic Development and Tourism for the Western Cape comments,
"The Western Cape Government is pleased to be associated with an event
of this calibre that draws artists from across the globe and we look
forward to yet another spectacular show.” Patricia De Lille, Executive
Mayor of Cape Town echoes this sentiment, "This musical celebration
epitomises what this administration aims to do in building an inclusive
city by bringing together people from diverse backgrounds throughout the
city and the rest of the country to enjoy the musical talents of local
artists and renowned international superstars. The City will continue to
support this festival to promote the heritage of jazz music and ensure
that it continues to attract large crowds."

The gold sponsor for
the Cape Town International Jazz Festival 2012 is the Department of Arts
and Culture. Other sponsors include Provincial Government of the
Western Cape, The City of Cape Town, Cape Town Routes Unlimited, Oude
Meester, Hansa Pilsner, Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Cape
Town Partnership and the Western Cape Education Department.

Tickets
for the festival are R400 for a single day pass and R550 for a two-day
weekend pass. As in previous years, there is an additional fee of R30
per act for performances at the Rosies stage.

Tickets are available at Computicket and Shoprite-Checkers stores.
The GRAMMY Foundation® was established in 1989 to cultivate the understanding, appreciation and advancement of the contribution of recorded music to American culture — from the artistic and technical legends of the past to the still unimagined musical breakthroughs of future generations of music professionals. The Foundation accomplishes this mission through programs and activities that engage the music industry and cultural community as well as the general public. The Foundation works in partnership year-round with its founder, The Recording Academy®, to bring national attention to important issues such as the value and impact of music and arts education and the urgency of preserving our rich cultural heritage. Starkey Hearing Foundation is striving to foster greater understanding among individuals and communities through hearing care by focusing on awareness, education, protection and treatment so the world may hear. Hearing loss affects one in 10 Americans, and 63 million children worldwide, yet many do not have access to the hearing devices that can help them. From 2000– 2010, Starkey Hearing Foundation fit more than 500,000 hearing aids to people in need in the United States and around the world. The foundation has grown that commitment to more than 100,000 hearing aids annually and is dedicated to fitting 1 million hearing aids this decade. In addition to giving the gift of hearing through worldwide hearing missions, Starkey Hearing Foundation promotes hearing health awareness through the Listen Carefully initiative and provides hearing instruments to low-income Americans through the Hear Now program.

The Pacific Jazz Institute at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley presents composer, arranger, keyboardist and trombonist Brian Culbertson for 6 nights and 9 shows. Band members are Eddie Miller (keys and vocals), Michael Thompson (guitar), Nate Kearney Jr. (bass), and Chris Miskel (drums). Show times: Tuesday - Thursday and Sunday at 7:30 & 9:30pm and Friday - Saturday at 7:30 & 9:30pm.

Brian Culbertson began his quest in music at the age of 8 on piano, adding drums at 9, trombone at 10 then bass at 12. He grew up in Decatur, IL, loving genre-crossing jazz-pop artists such as Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Tower of Power, the Brecker Brothers, David Sanborn, Yellowjackets and Maynard Ferguson. So naturally gifted was Brian, his 7th grade piano recital consisted of all original tunes. Brian flourished in high school bands with his father, Jim Culbertson, as the school’s award-winning jazz band director, moved to Chicago to complete his studies at private DePaul University, then went on to compose jingles for clients such as United Airlines, Oldsmobile, and Sears in the city’s highly competitive advertising community.

In 1994, at age 20, Brian self-produced his debut, Long Night Out, followed in short order by Modern Life (driven by the hit single “Come To Me, this 1995 album was his first album to top R&R and Gavin’s Contemporary Jazz charts), and After Hours (1996). With 1997’s Secrets, the hits kept comin’ with “So Good” and “On My Mind.” His 1999 follow-up, Somethin’ Bout Love, also sat high among the CJ Top 20 for nearly a year with the two No. 1 singles, “Back In The Day” and “Do You Really Love Me?”

In 2001, Brian released Nice & Slow (featuring special guests Herb Alpert and singer Kenny Lattimore), which spent six weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Chart thanks to the No. 1 singles “Get It On” and “All About You.” Then came Come On Up (2003), highlighted by a blazing cover of Earth Wind & Fire’s “Serpentine Fire” and the beautiful “Our Love.” 2005’s It's On Tonight found him making the switch from Warner Bros. to GRP/Verve for a sensual-leaning project featuring the lead-off single "Hooking Up" plus "Let's Get Started," as well as special guests Patti Austin, Will Downing, Chris Botti, Kirk Whalum, Ledisi and Boney James. A Soulful Christmas, the 2006 holiday album swiftly followed.

Last year, Brian produced the ultimate concert souvenir with the dual DVD/CD package Live From The Inside, capturing for posterity what the experience of making music is really like. “It's not just about the show,” he insists, “it's about everything that happens before and after.” Far from a stodgy ol’ documentary, it’s a dynamically lensed feature that allows you to get up close and personal with all the action – backstage, on stage, on the road and in the studio – with ever changing angles and focal points. It features Brian, his band and another all-star assembly of friends/guests. The package is a brisk seller at Brian’s explosive concerts, affording fans a special way to take him home with them. www.brianculbertson.com

Indaba’s international community of more than 600,000 musicians will be given each component of the song—including the individual vocal, drum, keyboard, and other tracks—and asked to create their own remix. Black Radio boldly stakes out new musical territory and transcends any notion of genre, drawing from jazz, hip-hop, R&B, soul and rock, but refusing to be pinned down by any one tag. The album showcases Glasper as a multi-talented producer, songwriter, keyboardist, and bandleader, and features many of his famous friends from across the spectrum of urban music, seamlessly incorporating appearances from a jaw-dropping roll call of special guests that includes Erykah Badu, Bilal, Lupe Fiasco, Lalah Hathaway, Shafiq Husayn (Sa-Ra), KING, Ledisi, Meshell Ndegeocello, Chrisette Michele, Musiq Soulchild, Stokley Williams (Mint Condition), and yasiin bey.
